About the Author
Instead of writing a simple paragraph about myself, I decided to model this page after the pages in Celebrating You and Me. Enjoy.
I enjoy living in Indianapolis, Indiana because:
I am close to my parents and extended family. My husband's immediate family also lives here. On top of that, it's an awesome city with much to offer.
When I taught, I:
was always a resource and collaborative teacher. That meant I went into the general education setting to support students with IEPs while also being available to the other students in the classroom. I always taught at the middle school level and continue to enjoy that age group.
These are the things I have studied:
I have a BS in Elementary Education, and MA in Education (special education) and a Ph.D. from the Beach Center on Disabilities at the University of Kansas School of Education. There, I focused on parent-professional partnerships.
I like to run because:
it makes me feel strong and free. My husband and I have a group of friends with whom we've run since the early 1990's. I've run 8 marathons and many more half marathons.
When I go to work, I:
get to do a ton of different things. Sometimes I'm working with teachers and school officials, sometimes I'm working with parents of children with disabilities, and sometimes I'm working with the staff that support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. My work life is varied and I love it.
These are the kind of books I like:
um... all of them. I love the classics but at the same time can pick up a summer novel that is finished in one afternoon. I'm intrigued by biographies and autobiographies and also enjoy reading about the religions of the world, customs and beliefs.
This is how I volunteer in my community:
my work and volunteer work blend together constantly. I give time and money to several organizations that support people with disabilities but I support the arts in Indianapolis. I tend to sign up for weekend projects that require the use of tools and muscle. I love to build things.
These are my gifts and talents:
I love to laugh. Whenever I have left a place of employment or school, I'm always remembered for my loud, punctuating laugh. I've been told it's a gift. I also prefer to see the good in people and situations. We all get down and frustrated, but I'd rather see the up side than dwell in the negative.
