Why this book? Why this topic?

While on a flight home in October of 2008, thoughts of my goddaughter popped into my head. I began thinking about all of the things I wanted for her and all of the things her mother wanted for her. I wanted her to gain a clear path to grounded decision-making. While life's experiences will truly inform her path, I knew that conversations would go a good distance.

Every kind of prompt I came up with fit into the categories of self-confidence, the ability to know herself, the strength to make decisions true to her soul, and a spirit of generosity to bless those around her. I knew that all of this came from a combination of her own soul and her environment and the environment was something I could impact. But where would I start?

The poem on page sixty-nine is what started the whole process. I am the first to admit that I don't understand poetry and have never known what poems are “good” and which ones are written poorly, but I have been told that if a poem speaks to you, it is good. After I wrote my poem at 30,000 feet, the format of the book and the first 30 days of prompts came flying into my head (no pun intended). I almost couldn't get them down quickly enough. After sharing my idea with a trusted source, more ideas came. I would be driving to work and another prompt would come into my head. I always carry a digital recorder with me, and it came in handy!

After I gave the book to my goddaughter and her mother for Christmas of 2008, I was encouraged to publish it. I gave the journal to more friends to get feedback from them and their children. With that feedback, I knew I needed to move forward.

We know that children are our future and it is our responsibility to help them shape themselves as thoughtful, open, inspired individuals. My hope is that through this book, grandparents & parents can assist their children's / grandchildren's growth in each of the categories I chose. I look forward to hearing the stories you share with me of how this book has impacted your relationship with your child or grandchild. If you'd like your comments posted on this website, please let me know that, too.

In peace,
